October 28th, 1940: Metaxas says “No” and Italy invades Greece
During World War II, Germany, led by Hitler, along with its ally Italy, led by Benito Mussolini, managed to conquer most of Europe. The Italian dictator decided to conquer Greece.
On the morning of October 28, 1940, the Italian ambassador to Athens wakes up the Greek Prime Minister, John Metaxas. The Italian government demands that its ports, roads, railways and camp sites be allocated to its army. In short, it demands the surrender of Greece. The Greek answer could not have been different: NO.
The epic struggle of the Greeks in the mountains of Pindos remains in history as a point of reference and honor. That’s why Winston Churchill said that "From now on we will not say that the Greeks are fighting like heroes but that the heroes are fighting like Greeks.". So let’s all nations work together for a beautiful and peaceful world. We owe it to all those heroes who sacrificed for our Greece to be free today.
